Ricoh GXR A16 24-85mm
Editor's Review
The A16 24-85mm adds another sensor/lens combination to the modular GXR system. Rather than switching the lens on a body with enclosed sensor, Ricoh has bundled the sensor with the lens; you just have to buy the GXR back. While the benefit of such a system is that you can use optimally-matched lenses and sensors, as well as consistently newer technology, you also pay for a new sensor every time you purchase a new lens. This newest addition pairs a new 16 megapixel CMOS sensor with a 24-85mm f3.5-5.5 zoom. It will also do 720p HD video. Reviews note that although the image quality is exemplary, it's hard to warrant paying another $600 in addition to the camera body for what is essentially a slow kit lens. Ricoh really has wormed itself into a tough spot with the GXR system.
