This was a solid camera, but it's out of production. It was not directly replaced, but the most similar current model is the TL105. Here's what we had to say about the SL202 when it was released in early 2009:

The Samsung SL202 is an excellent camera with a number of stunning features at a low price. A 3x optical zoom with dual image stabilized zoom and high quality 10.2-megapixel resolution allows you to get up close to the action without sacrificing picture color or sharpness. Additionally, Face Detection, Smile and Blink Detection and a range of other camera modes ensure that you're pictures are never a second too late. A 2.7-inch LCD screen makes taking and reviewing photos easier than ever. The SL202 allows you to save to SD/SDHC/MMC cards for easy storage and sharing. lines/grid lines on screen (britni — 02/13/2013)

There are lines on the screen when i take a picture and they stay as im viewing the pictures. they arnt on there when i upload them but they are very annoying. I think we somehow got in a different shooting mode or something? I dont know but i want them gone.

Most cameras have this as a setting, it is typically called the viewfinder grid. Look through your menu for that option and switch it off.

Hi i bought my samsung camera a couple of years ago and the warranty has run out. But i had not dropped the camera or had any water spilliages with it but when i turn on the power button theblue ring turn on and the lens comes out then a bleep noise happenes and the lens goes straight back in again! Ican view my pictures and access the menu but i cant take any photos or turn it on properly. Please help

It sounds like the lens was hit out of alignment, or perhaps there's a bit of sand or something in the assembly that prevents the lens from extending fully. You would have to send it in to a repair center to see what the problem actually is.

I don't know if you have thrown it away yet (I have almost pitched mine for the same problem) but try setting it face-down and turning it on. For some reason the lens will not retract if it has to have weight on it. Dumb band-aid fix for a dumb camera.

Camera SL202 major problem.. (Henrietta — 12/07/2010)

Ok so i am in terrible need of help with my samsung sl202. i've currently got the camera a little wet by a few water droplets but i figured that wasnt such a huge deal because i used it afterwards and it worked perfectly fine, even after i dropped it a few times (on soft carpet) Then it beeped so i figured it ran out of battery. i put up to charge for about 2 hours, then when i tried to turn it back on the lenses are completely out, will not go back in, and when i press the power button, the blue ring comes on for a second, beeps and completely shuts off, i've tried taking out the battery in case it needed to dry out but when i put it back in it just does the same thing, and the lenses are still fully out. Please help!! do i need to buy a new battery or is this an unfixable problem?

It's still wet inside. What you need to do is immerse it completely in a bag of uncooked rice. NO KIDDING. Place about two cups of rich in the ziplock and then bury the camera in it. If you need more rice, add it. Then seal it and leave it there for a week. The rice will act as a desiccant and draw out the moisture. After which, it should start up.

Camera issue (KM — 11/23/2010)

This camera takes great pictures and takes really decent video but DO NOT TRY TO ZOOM IN while the camera is recording. The sound will cut out until you stop zooming and then will pick back up once finished. Didn't know this until I got home after recording an event for a friend. Great cheap camera otherwise but wish I would have known about the sound issue.

Prefocus put your subject right in the middle mad press your shutter half way. You'll see a green light signifying the focus is locked. Then Recompose the image as you like and press it the rest of the way to take the picture.

The 202 is an awesome camera! It has something called beauty shot which absoultely makes you look amazing! It is easy to use, takes excellent pictures and videos.. the only downside of the camera is that it can be a little slow sometimes.

I just bought new batteries for my Samsung SL202 camera which did the same thing, power on, lens comes out, camera beeps and lens goes in and shuts down. I've cleaned the battery contacts and the new batteries aren't the problem. I just wrote to Samsung but doubtful they will fix this, apparently they have a bad track record with this camera.

Hi,

I have owned my Samsung SL202 for about 6 months, and have enjoyed it very much. I have recently run into a problem with the camera and was wondering if anyone can help. This camera has not been dropped, or been wet. When I press the power button, the blue ring around the button turns on, the lens comes out, but immediately goes back in and beeps at me right before the blue light turns off. I can, however, access my pictures on the camera that I have taken by pressing the review button. If anyone has run into this problem and has fixed it, or anyone has anything to say that they think will work, your insight is greatly appreciated. It seems like I have tried everything. Thank you for your time.

There is an adjustable auto shutoff feature which causes the camera to shut down to save power. If it's been changed to a short time interval, this could be the issue.

So try to change the setting by:

1. Power on your camera.
2. Press the Menu button.
3. Press the directional pad left or right until you've highlighted the Settings Menu.
4. Press the directional pad to the right to access the Settings Sub Menu
5. Press the directional pad up or down until you've highlighted Power Off, and then press the OK button.
6. Press the directional pad up or down until you highlight the shut off time you desire.
7. Press the OK button.

Another option is to clean your battery contacts with a pencil eraser. They do get dirty with skinoil and dust which can cause performance issues.

You can also try updating your firmware and resetting your camera.

Absent that, since it's still under warranty, I'd send it in for repair.

I have a Samsung SL202 and a PC with Windows XP. The Samsung Master software has been installed. The computer does not recognize the camera when I connect it, so I cannot download any pictures. Is there a software patch that I need?

(I have reloaded the software and restarted the computer without any luck.)

i had this camera for less than 6 months acutally i got it in AUgust and while snapping shots at JUNkunoo in the bahamas on new years day the lens just stuck and went crazy. the camera had never been dropped. like mark i especially liked the beautyshot mode but the life of the camera wasnt worth the 150 i paid for it.

And at 5 months you didn't send it in for repair? Or did you? That's what warranties are for and odds are, if a gadget is going to fail, it's going to do it in the first year unless there's an actual product defect.

Bottom line is, a percentage of any camera is going to fail. It stinks you got one of them, but it happens.

My friends were taking pictures with my camera and i guess the battery wasn't charged enough so it turned off without the lense going in. I plugged it in until the light was green and it won't turn on when I press the on button, but it will turn on when i press the button to look at the pictures. It turns on but only for a second then goes black again. help?

I've owned this camera for about 9 months. I was VERY happy the first couple of months, but, gradually the lag time between pressing the button and the snapping of picture is 3-7 seconds (even when priming by holding button halfway down). This makes taking pictures of things that may only be there for that split second you see your subject and manage to press the button exactly at the right moment, virtually impossible! Any remedies????

Try resetting the camera. Then prefocus your images before shooting them (press the shutter half way) and pan with your action. Being in this habit will combat the frustrating shutter lag somewhat.

How do I fix a card error? (ageorge23 — 01/04/2010)

When I turn on the camera, the screen reads "card error" and does not allow me to take pictures. I've tried moving the lock on the memory card in both directions, but that did not help. What do I do to correct the card error and continue to take pictures?

Have you formatted the card yet? Reformatting it will lay out the structure again and clear out any questionable sectors caused by files that are still there (when you delete something, it doesn't really get deleted until that section is overwritten). You can also try a card recovery utility like F-Recovery.

But this is usually an indication that your card is starting to fail. And they're so cheap these days, it may be time to replace it.

You have to use the camera to reformat the card from the format function in the 'menu' button. I believe the camera installs its own files onto the memory card.

If you reformatted the card using a Windows or Mac computer the camera will not be able to read the card and you will get a "card error."

I have not fixed mine yet but I think I will have to copy the files that the camera installs on the memory card from another working card and then copy onto the memory card using a different card reader.

If it's frozen, its' crashed. You've pretty much got no other option but to remove the batteries and let the capacitors drain so it can then be reset. If you're lucky, the video was written to the card before it froze up. But if not, it doesn't matter, you already lost it. So just bite the bullet ....

First I'd ask if you completely recharged the battery at the beginning. What you need to do is charge the battery overnight. Deplete it. Then recharge it overnight, deplete it again. Then recharge. This will break in the battery to give you the max charge.

If you're still having trouble, TAKE IT BACK. You probably have a faulty camera.

I bought this camera maybe a month ago and haven't used it as much as I wanted to. For a brief time the lens wouldn't come on when I turned it on. It would make this beep, turn on and then just turn off. The lens issue has corrected itself. It went on a beach adventure and well, I figured there was sand blocking it. I charged it overnight and it's not doing anything productive. I hit the power button, the lens come out and it beeps and turns off. I don't know what's going on with it and I'm slowly losing hope on the ways to fix this.

Well, try cleaning your battery contacts. Also, see if your battery is actually charged. If you can find a volt meter, it'll tell you. But the thing is since you've only had it a month, I'd send it in under a warranty repair while it's still in force.

Answer to roxyboo regarding the camera "beep and close" issue. (Mark — 08/22/2010)

I encountered the same issue with my Samsung SL202. After some puzzling, I found out the problem is that the lens is not COMPLETELY extending and that is why it retracts and then the camera shuts off. SOLUTION: as the lens comes out, quickly grasp the smaller part of the lens, and give it a gently pull. It does not require anything more than a GENTLE pull. The problem is in the gearing that drives the lens to full extend position. To be honest once you get used to doing that, it will work fine, power up and take great pics! True, it is a "getaround" as a solution, however it beats throwing a perfectly good camera away! Take beautiful pictures and in movie mode it does a very good job as well!

I just Googled and found this suggested solution after buying a replacement battery and charging it and getting the same problem with the "shutdown immediately after startup"! Glad this works for me now. Perhaps Samsung made cheap gears, or perhaps the lens tried to pop out sometime on my camera and it was restricted and stripped some gears or something.

Well, initially, you want to charge it overnight to give it a good LONG charge and "plow the fields" as it were. Then, I'd deplete it normally, charge it overnight again, deplete it. After which, you'll be able to charge it in about 2 hours.

There hasn't been an official statement, but it really doesn't matter, because you don't need the software the comes with the camera. I'm sure Samsung will release drivers for Apple, if not at first, eventually. If they don't release them at first, you just need to invest in a memory card reader, which costs approximately $10-15. Then, if you want to edit/view the photos from there, you can use the Apple software that comes with your computer, or some free software like Picasa.

The 202 features auto smart mode, it can choose the scene mode for you, eg fireworks, text, sundown etc. I also has beauty shot. In that mode it will adjust exposure for skin tones and also reduce or eliminate skin blemishes. Also mode selector wheel has been moved to the back of the camera, making it far easier to use. I suggest you go to check one out at your local Best Buy.

As stated in some previous comments, the SL202 worked fantastic. This unit was NOT dropped and was NOT mishandled in ANY way. We owned this camera for approx. 9 months and the lens would simply stay open and the LCD would shut off. I understand normal wear on cameras can cause things to stop working, however after 9 months it should NOT completely stop working! Samsung, as stated above will NOT cover this camera under warranty in any way. Final resolve, I went out and purchased a PANASONIC Lumix FH20. Can't be any happier with this unit to date.... The Samsung will go in the box of "Stupid electronic purchases" to never be seen from again!!!!! Thanks a lot Samsung for me wasting $149.99........ (ROLLEYES)

had this camera for a few days, it takes great pictures , menu easy to use, no shutter lag, maximum time of loading a pic in poor lighting is about 2-3 sec max. I had other cameras that had like 1.5 sec shutter lag and loading time could take 3-5 sec.

like some reviews said, there is a static noise coming from the camera during video playback, static got less once i transfter it to my PC. Anyways, I exchanged for another one and this one is alot quieter during the video playback.

i suggest to try this out at a store, record a video testing the audio. if you hear too much static, ask for another one.

this camera i jus bought it today because i had previously gotten a camera by vivitar and it sucked!! soo i returned it 2 day and then we went to bestbuy tetsed it out then decided to buy it it looked pretty good for 99 bucks. so when i got home took a few pics and a vid i was impressed! they are SO clear and briht and the color looks beautiful so is the vid i love it!its also 10.2 mega pixels which is a lil more than my mothers camera (hers was 10.0) and it cost way less. hers was fuji or sumthin.

I own a SLR Canon Rebel which is about $700 and so I wanted something that was going to be reliable and small. I have gone through some Kodak point and shoots only to be let down by them breaking and I also had two cannon point and shoots break on me also... So when I went to BestBuy I was in love with the baby blue casing on this Samsung but didnt even know that samsung made cameras (the guy that sold it to me didnt know they did either until he got this job). I ended up looking around at other cameras just because I thought something with a more well known name would better suit me, but ended up going on a whim and buying the Samsung SL202 and I LOVE IT!!! I have had no problems with it what so ever and have had it over a year now :) Definitely reccomend it to anyone looking for something small and cost affordable. Also I am a Photojournalism major!

the ppl at BestBuy were a little hesitant to recommend this Samsung camera, sayin the co. hadn't been making cameras long..anyhow. they obviously hadn't tested it out. I tried every camera in the 110-270 range and picked this one out as my favorite before seeing the price. I wanted something self explanatory that worked the best for what i wanted it for (basically taking vacation photos and self snapshots because thats what i do too much as well as tons of pics of my dogs and aquariums) ha. anyhow. LOVE this camera. love all the features. my best purchase this year.

This camera is so different from all the other cameras I have previously owned. It contains many new features and great image quality for a low cost. I picked this cam up for 110 dollars and I love it. It has smile and blink detection. It has a feature that automatically removes red and blemished faces. Instant redeye removal. For a hundred bucks you cant go wrong with this camera.

I went on vacation in August and forgot my digital Sony camera at home. What is vacation without photos, right? I went to BestBuy and hoped for the best. At the risk of sounding to "girly" I bought it because it was a gorgeous shade of aqua blue and I was in a hurry. Not only that... the price was right. I am tickled to death with it. I would recommend it to anyone. It takes great concert shots, close-ups, landscapes... you name it... it worked great! i tried taking pictures with the fireworks setting and it did not work. it can out blurry and weird. the auto setting worked better for fireworks. also does not take many pictures in a row. i was trying to take pictures and it takes 10 seconds in between pictures. other than that, its good and i like it

I have not dropped the camera anything it just quit on me and now Samsung wants me to pay them for a BRAND new camera that I took good care of and it fucking died after two weeks Wtf I am so pissed but whatever my fiance is going to figure it out so i don't have to stress BUT DO NOT DO NOT waste you time effort or money on this piece of shit!

i just got this camera and it has everything i want and more! the beauty shot is amazing and all of the specific camera settings are great. the video wasnt too awesome, but thats not a huge concern of mine. i got this camera in the blue. it's more turquiose than the pictures show, but it's very pretty!! --- a great camera with a great price!! :)

The person who has mentioned the problem about video is right. A strange and rather annoying noise buzzes constantly when the video is played. The noise is prominent when video is played on camera itself but a little less prominent when we upload it. But there is a noise. Otherwise it is excellent. Picture Quality and sound and video quality(except that noise ) are very good. Other cameras that cost $150 have other problems such as bad picture quality. Keeping in view the cost and picture quality and other excellent features , I think I should keep it. I will keep this camera.

Awesome little Digital Camera (Mark — 05/09/2009)

when i bought this Camera over at target it was on sale for 99.99, i compared to the other cameras like the Sony Cyber shot 10.1 Digital Camera but that cost 149.99 so i think the regular price on my camera is the same so i saved 50 dollars. this is my first time buying a digital camera, i always borrowed my mom's 7.1 Megapixel Camera. its nice but i like mine the best. so if u guys want a camera i would get this.

My CyberShot that I had & loved for the past 4 years finally gave out & we were not on a CyberShot budget so I spent a few days researching/reading reviews for other digital cameras. I LOVE IT!! Someone said in a review on this site that the sound stops when zooming in during video mode: FYI on video mode on every digital you have to zoom before starting to record video. On this camera in particular when you zoom during a video the sound will cut out when you are pushing the zoom button but resumes when you stop pressing it so you get a noticeable sound cut out when zooming. This camera is great: the screen is large (2.7"), it has a help guide built-in, a feature that retouches the subject's skin so it appears blemish-free & best of all, it has it's own rechargeable battery and a plug for recharging so no more searching for AA batteries (just recharge while you sleep at night!).

I just bought this camera and it seems to be working fine except for the video option. Video is an important aspect of the camera for us, so I'm a bit unhappy. When playing the video there is a constant high-pitch noise. Also, when zooming, sound stops recording completely. The rest of the camera modes appear to be alright. I'm going to return the camera tomorrow and look for one with better video sound quality. Any suggestions?

So I went w/ my mom camera shopping for her. Well we got hers and as I was walking I saw the prettiest camera and was like Oooo. xD yeah i know. Anyways I started operating it and i fell in LOVE with it <3. Not only is it stylish, but it is also easy to use and has lots of awesome features. I've had it for 2 days and I can't seem to put it down. My favorite camera so far. FYI, I named it Saul Hernandez (lead singer of Caifanes/Jaguares).

This camera has some really terrific features not found on older model digital cameras. I love the image blur reduction and it's ability to detect a face in the view finder. Found it on sale!!

so me and my bf went camera shopping after i dropped my Casio Camera in the sand at the beach. we looked around for 2 hours at difff stores and when i found this one it was sooo amazing i love this camera the features actually work some camera has that only takes the pics when u smile feature but it never ever works but this one does this is great camera u wont regret buying it
