Who wouldn't want a big zoom stuffed in a tiny body? Sony's H55 is the latest camera to do that. "Fun zoom" models like this are a dime a dozen these days, but they all tend to be well made and users seem to be happy with them. Image quality is pretty competitive and it features, as all Sony's latest compacts do, the cool Sweep Panorama function. For the money, the H55 is up there with the best of the fun zooms.

how much? (millie de caostr — 03/12/2010)
how much is sony cybershot H55?

It will be $250 USD when it's released in April. Pre-orders should be available from our partners soon.

Does the Sony H55 zoom work in movie mode?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (03/13/2010)
Not likely. The problem is that in compact designs zooming while video taping causes motor noise to be picked up by the cheap omnidirectional microphones.

YES- It does zoom. I have one and it works well

Last year's model (Sony H20) was a similar product, and the zoom worked during video capture. I would assume they wouldn't delete a feature like that.

230K Pixel LCD... (R. Young — 04/19/2010)
With only 230K pixel LCD, can one "see" the LCD screen in direct sunlight?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (04/21/2010)
That's why you need a camera with a viewfinder. LCDs just can't handle the direct sunlight no matter how many pixels it has.

Comparing the Sony H55 and Pana ZR3? (Donna — 04/19/2010)
I am looking at this Sony H55 and the new Pana ZR3. They are close in price. I know the H55 has 10x zoom and the ZR3 has 8x, which I am fine with. I know you haven't yet done full reviews on either, but I would like your opinion on 4 things between these 2: 1.) Which is better in low-light?, 2.) Which takes better video?, 3.) Which has better image stabilization (as I don't have steady hands)?, and 4.) Which is easier to use, and which takes sharper images? Thank you in advance for your help.

The Panasonic FH20 is a better choice. It's got a faster f2.0 lens and is great for low-light. Price $175. Worth every penny.
reply to this comment
Donna (04/23/2010)
Thanks for the suggestion, but I read that the ZR3 has a much better lens and much better HD video than the FH20. I know it's under $200 but I am willing to spend up to $300. I really had my choice narrowed down to the ZR3 and this Sony H55. If you had to choose between these two, which would you go with?
reply to this comment
Liam McCabe (04/30/2010)
I just tested the ZR3, and it's very good but falls short of fantastic. I haven't tried the H55 either, but my gut tells me to go with the Sony.
reply to this comment
Liam McCabe (04/30/2010)
It's also a little bit cheaper too, so that's worth considering.

(05/05/2010)
They use different approach to high ISO noise reduction. Sony is more aggressive in noise reduction and smudges fine details smoothly without leaving grainy look. Panasonic leaves grainy look at high ISO, but shows more fine details. It depends on your taste. HD video quality should a little be better with Panasonic as it does intelligent resolution for video too. The image stabilization and auto-focus are probably similar between two. Right now H55 seems a little cheaper. If the price of both camera is the same, I would go with ZR3.

SONY vs. SONY vs. SONY vs. Something Else? (Emily :) — 05/06/2010)
? ? ? SONY DSCH55 vs. SONY DSCHX5V vs. SONY DSCHX5 vs. ..... ? ? ?
Stupid / Embarressing Question:
Is there any difference between "HX5V" and "HX5"?
i) CHOOSING A NEW CAMERA
What is important to me:
- good quality focus when zooming {minimal noise, better detail)
- Optical Zoom. A minimum of 7x Optical Zoom. Wider the lense the better (more light).
- Camera features: editing, cropping, resizing, red eye, and the hundreds of new "fancy shmancy" features!
- 3.0" Inch LCD - Don't wear glasses but find I never use the 'inconveniently' placed view finder!
ii) PREVIOUSLY OWNED:
- OLympus C-740 Ultra Zoom - 10x Optical, 3 MegaPixel - Beautiful with MASSIVE lens ;) (5-8 years old))
- Richo Caplio RR1 "Sandwich" camera - 4mp, x3 - Great Camera (8-9 Years old)
So many many many more!
iii) CURRENTLY OWN:
SONY T7 (5mp, 3x), SONY P150 (7mp, 3x), SONY W150 (8mp 5x)
Looking for the next step!
Great lens, great zoom, great buttons, great layout, great interface, great everything!
Thanks for your time!

It looks like you are a loyal Sony camera customer.
Your next choice would depend on your budget range and brand preference too. If you wish to stay with Sony and are willing to spend more than 300, HX5V would be good for you I think. There is no HX5 (people just omits the last "V" at times).
If you are also willing to look outside Sony, I would recommend looking at Panasonic ZS7. It has the best in class auto-focus, image stabilization and high enough zoom 12X. Panasonic's zoom works quite smoothly unlike jerky movement of others in its class.

SONY vs. SONY vs. SONY vs. Panasonic vs. Something Else? (Emily :) — 05/07/2010)
I noticed you can't actually do alot of things within the Sony H series cameras!
Why would they remove the basic: crop, resize, edit etc features???
I had a play with my W150... It really is a good camera... Will miss it!
Had a play with a demo H5XV, very solid and light weight, definetly less than 200 grams!
Battery life is important.
IF you are on a budget, and after a great all round camera, then get the H55.
IF you are after a professional camera, then get the H5XV.
Decisions decisions!
I've never owned a panasonic. They make 10/10 other products... But i'm a little worried changing to a new menu system, having had a disaster with the Olympus... My god it wasn't friendly!
SDHC memory is incredibly cheap!
Although it says it's "up to 20 MB/s"... While they say the Sony Memory Stick 'Mark 2' is a minimum of 5mb and minimum of 35 or something...
Check the Sony Website for ALL the specifications!
Must say i'm very impressed with DigitalCamera-HQ.com, have always visited dpreview, but find it too generic! All the reviews complain about such minor things that no one is interested in, when buying camera, they forget the basic every day features that they DO or DONT have!!!

How does the H55 compare with the H20? I was VERY pleased with the H20 but it was run over by a car this weekend and now I need to replace it. It appears that the H55 is a little cheaper than the discontinued H20. I compared the specs and there are some differences - I don't care about more MP but will I see a big difference not having the Karl Ziess lens?

Just bought a Panasonic FH22 for vacation pictures and was not so happy. I got a Sony H55 to compare it with. Well the Sony is pretty lousy. It takes lots of blurry pictures especially with a zoom, the flash is almost always necessary, and the flash is light on one side and not the other. Also the lcd screen is not very impressive. Save your money. I still have not found the camera I am looking for, but I know which I am returning.

Red tint in most pictures. (Shaun — 05/18/2010)
Do you know what would cause most of the pictures taken with the sony h55 to have a red tint to them?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (05/20/2010)
Could be a failing CCD. Could also just be a normal fringing that comes with high MP on a small chip. Try resetting the camera and installing any available firmware updates. They may have fixed it there.

The best picture quality is dependent on personal taste too. I think it will come down to SX210 and ZS7 for you. Resolution wise ZS7 is better, color and low light will be better with SX210. And WB650 is good compromise between two.

Narrow your choice (Fiqqer — 05/24/2010)
No camera is the best at everything. Any of the three I mention will be perfect for you. The simplest to use and with the best video is the Panasonic TZ7. The better image quality may be had by the Canon 200/210 which ffers a bit more manual control if you are interested n photography, rather than just taking photos. The best allround is the Fuji F80EXR, however you need to change the settings once you get the Camera to et the better photos - which means learning about photography or reading information on the best camera settings from websites.

H55 vs SX120 (erica flaherty — 06/02/2010)
Trying to decide between the H55 and Canon SX200. Which one will give me the best looking pictures - most likely on auto mode. Also looking for fast shutter lag times and shot to shot times as am mostly taking pictures of my kids. Also, was thinking about the SX120, but not crazy about the manual flash and AA batteries. What are your thoughts?

Canon Lense Problems (Christina — 07/27/2010)
I have had two canons (both elph sd1100s) and both had lense error problems. The second one I bought with a two year warranty and had fixed for this problem during that warranty. It just happened again, about 6 months past the end of the warranty leaving me cameraless. All of the times that it happened with both cameras were inconvenient/on vacation/etc.
These are the two cameras I was going back and forth between, but I have heard so much gripe from others about the problem with the canon lenses that I am wary of purchasing another. I'm getting a 4 year warranty on anything I buy, but that does me no good if I'm on the first day of my vacation and the lense becomes stuck.
Do you think this is enough to hold me back from the canon? Have their more recent cameras been suffering from the fatal "Lens Error. Restart Camera" bug?

Liam McCabe (06/15/2010)
Hi Albert, I have no beef with Sony (though James DeRuvo seems to), I just think that they can be a bit pricey for the quality you get. My personal point-and-shoot is a Cybershot, and it serves me well, so no complaints there.
As for other cameras with the sweep panorama, I don't believe there are any -- Sony is unique in that regard. Many other cameras have the panorama assist feature, where you take three separate shots aided by a "ghosted" portion of a previous image, and software stitches them together. But no other sweep panorama cameras, I don't think. Sony makes a decent camera, not the best you can get for the dollar, but if the sweep feature means a lot to you, then don't feel bad about going Sony at all.

Okay. How can we help? I can offer that while Sony cameras are popular, lately their H series has suffered from lack luster low light performance.
Fortunately, the H55 has been able to avoid that signaling that SONY may have finally gotten a handle on the balance between MP and chip size. In the end, the H55 takes some great images. However, the downside is that with a shutter lag of nearly a second, you'll miss many a kodak moment.

I got the H55 the other day and have used it in a variety of situations to test it. A lot if not all of my pictures appear fairly grainy. Focusing in video is really annoying too. Without something rectangular or a face to focus on the camera really almost needs to be manually focused with the zoom. As far as the thumb grip, that's awesome and very convenient! The panoramic sweep is nice too, but everything is very grainy which annoys me very much. I liked the 10x optical zoom and all, but it left much left to be desired with how grainy it was in both indoor, outdoor, and in other situations as well.
HD video comes in either "fine" or "regular" the latter having a smaller file size. I couldn't notice a difference between the two, but the camera kinda distorts the mic a bit while zooming and zoom is slowed. However, it really is difficult to focus properly while in video mode.
Another issue I have is its fragility. I had the camera on my desk to take a self portrait and set the timer. I pressed the button, but as it focused the len's weight caused the camera to fall off my desk and onto the our tile floor from a height of about 5 feet. The lens was dented and now the camera no longer fuctions.
Luckily Newegg will let me RMA it, but considering the camera is out of stock I hopefully will get the opportunity to be refunded and get a different camera.

I agree- I just bought a H55 and took it to a wedding and got very bad pictures. The faces were all blurry. The photos at the alter were either too bright or grainy and red/dark. It also turns itself off if not being used which wore down the battery and had to be recharged after only 40 shots. Also, there is no user manual and when I called to ask about it I was told by someone in Manila that it would cost $11.00 to buy one, after I paid almost $300.00 for it. Or, I could download it fo the cost of an ink cartridge($20.00 +) and paper. Is there any camera out there that actually comes with a complete user manual?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (06/29/2010)
They do. All of them have a manual. But the benefit of the PDF file is it's searchable. You really don't need to print it.
But if yours didn't come with a manual, what else did it not come with? I ask because you may have bought something that is considered [url=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_... market"[/url] merchandise.
If something is grey market, it means that - although you may have gotten a great deal on it - it doesn't come with a warranty that will be honored here in this country. Which means if something goes wrong with the camera, you'll either have to send it to China to repair or pay to have it fixed yourself.

hello Chris, Liam..
Kindly help,
i am planning to buy a point and shoot camera. i am confused which camera should i buy.
i want to buy one of the
Sony DSC-W350
or
Sony H55
i would be taking picture indoor/outdoor/low light/day light/traveling/party etc(Mainly for travel/sightseeing and taking pictures of people and my 1 yr old niece playing.
).My wife and parents would be using the same. i just love taking pictures but i am not very good in photography and i wont be replacing the one i buy for 4 to 5 years...
The constraint of my budget is (200-250$) but i am highly confused with both.. i have not found much reviews of the H55 wheras i like the w350 on basis of looks, price and easy to carry.Does w350 zoom during a 720pHD movie..??
i want a camera with
1) GOOD IMAGE QUALITY (most important for me)
3) less/anti blur
4) Good image stabilization
5) 14 megapixels
6) Most of the time i would be using Auto mode (i would change scene selection mode)
7) red eye reduction
8) i mite shoot sports and/or action photos
9) some time i would be taking prints of images but not very huge

Thanks for your time and advise plz do kindly help
regards.

Frankly the largest difference between these two cameras is the zoom. The h55 has a highly useful 25-250mm 10x zoom while the W350 has a more reasonable 26-105mm zoom 4x zoom. If you can sacrifice the larger zoom of the h55, you'll get a much smaller camera that also has very slightly better image quality. And it's $50 cheaper!
By the way, looking at your list of needs you probably wont be particularly happy with either Sony. Neither has stellar image quality and 14 megapixels doesn't buy you anything when compared to a good 10 megapixels. And sports are next to impossible with a compact camera; the autofocus and operation are just too sluggish. That being said, the long zoom of the h55 would be useful in broad daylight for sports.

H55 rocks (Nemo Birdy — 07/01/2010)
Hey Talha, my husband bought H55 a month back and the results are outstanding. The picture quality is superb with a lot of zooming in features. Our life has changed with this camera. We can take pictures at any time of the day, and it shows natural colors. I would advice you to go for H55. Enjoy :D

sony h55 is a better model (vikas kumar — 07/19/2010)
i don't agree for your suggestion because i have two cameras sony h55 and canon sx120. I am happy with sony. It has many difference between these two cameras. And also i am happy with the low light condition photo . First difference between these two cameras is battery back up. Sony has far better battery back up as compare to canon sx120 and nikon l110. I really like his sweep panaromic mode.

You can add a time stamp with the included software. Note that the date and time each photo was taken is embedded in the exif data, which can be viewed with any photo program.

I tested the H55 and I wasn't too impressed with the LCD screen. The pictures looked grainy with a floresent tint when taken at full zoom (viewing them from the lcd screen).
