Sony Cybershot S650
Editor's Review
Like the S700, the Sony Cybershot S650 is a simple, entry-level point-and-shoot camera perfect for novice users looking to get their hands on a beefy 7.2 megapixel sensor. With that level of detail, and the handy on-screen feature guide, beginners should have no trouble snapping great photos. The S650 only differs from the S700 in that it has a slightly smaller LCD screen (2.0" as opposed to 2.4").

Sony Cybershot S650 Comments & Questions (write your own!)

Sorry, Ali.
Just a side note, don't use this Format memory option in the future after you've taken photos: it will erase the card as well as format it!
Open your memory stick with card reader and conect it to PC... in the windows Explorer delete all data on the drive of your memstick... format it with exFAT you will see that windows can format it to exFAT... than go to administrative Tools and choose Computer management and open it... in the Computer management windows goto storage-Removable storage- Media... see if there is your card reader or your memory stick name (but usually windows name it with number) and then right click to it and click free... and klick YES or OK if u get some question... and finally remove your memstick from reader and plug it into your camera and see if it work... more info see ishare2u.wordpress.com see ya
Is it an older card? They do wear out after awhile.
I got this S650 Sony camera .. and the thing is .. that i broke its LCD .. LOL .. and but it still works .. i manage to take pix .. itz all fine except the lcd i cant c it .. but A/V cable works so anyway .. yeah so i thought how about using it as WEBCAM .. cool .. right ?
y dont i repair it ? it cost more dan 150 $ to fix it .. i already got this cool nikon slr camera happy wid it .. juz need to use it as webcam .. anyone can help plz .. mail me .. HUMANITY ROCKS !!!!
peace .V
when i use the picture motion browser, it says so devices found
can anyone help me?
Also, dump PMB and try Picasa 3 by Google. One of the best, free, photo management tools around.
Also use batteries with a very high mAh of over 2500. These will satisfy the high power demands of a camera.
FIXED!!!!!!!
I have this DSC-S650 for like over a year
I suddenly had trouble with it, it came on but i had the black screen, I can see all the settings, menu options, set date and time, the works .. but i just couldnt see what i was pointing at, not even the LCD backlight option worked. so i decided to hard reset this device, as described on Song website, take the battery out hold down the power button for 15 secs and batteries in again and power up, sad to say this method didnt reset the camera muchless solved my problem. Then I decided to manually reset (Intialized) the camera, so i went into the menu option and set intialized it. cant exactly remember how the camera reacted but it did as i expected tho. it turned off so all settings can be restored, so then i proceeded to turn the camera on again to seee if it resetted and if it could fix the problem, this actually made the problem worst, the camera only starts up for a sec or so and shuts down (during this: the focus lens extends out and when the power comes off remains that way, i have to now take the batteries out, flip them around and power on again, which last for a sec or so, and then focus len retracts annd shuts down again)
When i connect it to my pc, the camera stays on, i can view all the data on the camera.
I am left with the option of getting into the camera and play Macgyver, dont think i wanna do that but i'll give this post a week if not i will and see what happens.
Hope you guys can help me out, i describe this problem to the best i could, thanks in advance. Plus I live till in Guyana (South America) I cant go to any store in my country to fix this cuz we dont have such skilled professionals, i got it as a gift from my cousin who is in canada, to ship it back there is more than the camera cost and my monthly salary is less than a new camera, fixing this camera is my only option, so please help me the best you can..thanks again
I read everyone saying smack the camera on the sid, i did too ... i hit (while facing the LCD screen) the right side twice and it came on.. i was surprised and still is (less than 5 mins ago) ... we'll see how long it last for ... i hit it with medium force, not gentle cuz its not an egg, but not too hard cuz its not a building too ... i prolly hit it with the same forced u used to knock on a door, but with the palm of my hand ...
anyways yayyy me!! and hope this help anyone or atleast someone out there with the samiliar ordeal .. good luck! this has being like a observation recording more than a thread ..cuz i made all the post! lol
Thanks Sony, who else makes camera's worth trusting
Cards do fail. files get corrupted. But luckily, you have tools to get your pictures before the card fails completely. But if it happens again, I'd toss the card. In fact, this leads me to a thought on memory cards. allow me to make an pitch for using several cards, rather than one large one. Reason being, insurance. Any memory card can fail or become corrupted. And when you're on vacation the last thing you want is to lose the opportunity to take pictures until you can recover that media card with a software utility. If your card goes bad, swapping another one for it at that moment is of advantage so you can keep taking pics.
No need to lose the moment because you relied on one card one when several can solve that problem. At the very least, you want to get more than one of whatever size you settle on.
In your case, it is possible that the memory card is not working, and the camera has no choice but to save the pictures to the internal memory.
I would use another card to record the pictures because the current one might be corrupted.
Another possible alternative is to format the memory card, if the camera recognizes it.
Go to Start > Settings> control panel> Display
A window will be presented where you can click " Settings " on the top right hand corner.
This will display the choices for ' color " and " screen area "
for " color ", set it to high color(16 bit) and for " screen area " set it to 1280 x 760
To enlarge video screen size, click the center logo at the top right hand corner of the screen, .
Another tip is to go to Sony's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.
If that isn't going it for you, you may have to send it in for service. Was it dropped? Is the lens locked out in place or retracted into the camera? If it's stuck outside, you have a lens alignment issue.
This actually doesn't sound like an issue with your camera. I have seen multi-port USB extenders that aren't of the best quality or cause issues like this. Because you don't have issues when you plug the camera directly into your PC's USB port, I think you have a similar issue with your USB extender. Many of these do not accept devices like this. You may have to continue plugging it into the USB ports directly on your PC or laptop. Good luck.
Andrew
It does not work with any USB. The only way I can get it to work is to take the memory card out and plug it into a laptop. It seemed to work intermittently with a USB cable but not any more. I have also tried 4 different cables and still no joy
Angela
You may need to update the firmware for your camera. You can find it (based on your operating system) on the Sony site ( esupport.sony.com/US/perl/s... ). I hope this helps.
Andrew
I own this Sony S650! Can anyone help me out on the functionality?
Digital P&S Cameras which zoom optically during video:
Canon PowerShot S5is
Kodak EasyShare Z712is
Casio Exilim EX-V7
Fuji Finepix S700
Sony DSC-H9, H7, and H5
Some others allow digital zooming during video.
Thanks for your response Larry
Your Handbook is available on the CD which came with your camera or online at
esupport.sony.com/US/perl/m...
Then go to Sony's website ( sonystyle.com ) and look for firmware updates under Customer Care. Download and install them.
Still under warranty?
2. Check that you review your images in the same mode you have taken your pictures in. For example P or Auto or any other present modes printed at the dial on the right side of camera. Although there is no technical explanation to it but it has been found to function fairly good when same mode viewing is done.
I would use either the "Twilight Portrait" or the "Twilight" selection on your mode dial (the first has a crescent moon with a person and the second just has a crescent moon). These will both adjust the camera for darker photos. The "Twilight Portrait" selection is specifically for taking photos of people in darker situations. Good luck and happy shooting.
Andrew
I would also like to know wheather we can avoid the Red-eyes, I had taken my friends Pic in dark when I checked the Image the person has very Dark red eyes like Devil. Can we correct it too. I had read about the red-eye correction tech. in Canon Camera's What abt sony?
Your camera does have a red-eye reduction function. It should be an icon that looks like an eye in your menu. Good luck. I personally use software to correct the issue after transferring photos to my computer.
Andrew
A card reader is about $10 and will cause your sd card to be read as a drive on the PC. Then it's a simple drag and drop.
No need to lose the moment because you relied on one large one when several smaller ones can solve that problem. At the very least, you want to get more than one of whatever size you settle on.
ps- thanks for the compliment..
BTW - If you're happy with the answer you received, you can simply click on "Mark for best answer" bubble and it will close out the question. Thanks for posting it and Good luck!
MEMORY STICK ERROR appears on the LCD screen.
The camera may display a MEMORY STICK ERROR or C:13:xx message (xx can be any random number) on the LCD screen for the following reasons:
IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
1. Remove and re-insert the Memory Stick® media several times.
2. The inserted Memory Stick media is not compatible with the camera. Check your instruction manual for information regarding Memory Stick media compatibility.
3. The inserted Memory Stick media is not formatted. Format the Memory Stick media using the FORMAT option in the camera menu.
WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. Formatting will erase all stored data, images, movies, etc., from the Memory Stick media.
4. The terminals on the Memory Stick media are dirty. Remove the Memory Stick media from the camera and use a soft dry cloth or pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Make sure there are no residual particles on the Memory Stick media before re-inserting it into the camera.
5. The data on the Memory Stick media or the Memory Stick media itself is damaged. Try using a different Memory Stick media in the camera.
Please advise and help.
Thank you.
I advise to try to use the card-reader on a coumputer. computers might recongize the card's format better than the cameras do.
G'luck
however, I can say that your lens is probably slightly out of alignment. this is a common issue with zoom lens point and shoots.
First thing to do is turn it on and off several times. Then try resetting the camera. That doesn't work, then recommend the following: if you gently, and I do mean GENTLY push against the lens with the PALM of your hand as you turn it on, it may cause it to depress back into the camera. If that doesn't work, and you can't reset it or turn it on/off several times, then you may have to send it in for a repair estimate.
really need help...
Movie Mode w/Sound: YES, although only 320-240 at 30fps.
I install the CD that inside of the boxes.and when i click on Picture Motion Browser i cant see my picutes. where can i go to see my pictures.HELLPPP MEEEE
If you're still having trouble, I'd advise either uninstalling and then reinstalling... or calling Sony's customer service center for troubleshooting help.
For the time being, you can always use a card reader that most computers have. If yours doesn't have one, they are very cheeap to buy. The reader would plug into your computer via USB and then you just slip your memory card into the reader. I like doing it this way because I can see my pictures on any computer, not just the one I installed the software on.
Best of luck!
If you're getting an error message ON YOUR CAMERA when trying to view your pictures, I can only guess your card is locked. You're kinda confusing me. Have you taken pictures successfully with this card, or did you pop in a new card and your camera won't let you take pictures? If THAT's the case, then you may need to format your card.
I can't troubleshoot with more information. If I'm misunderstanding you, please start all over and explain the problem fully.
In the meantime, you can call Sony to see if you can buy a disk from them, or you can do the card-reader to PC direct and avoid the software altogether.
Comparing a digital camera and a webcam , I would not use a camera as a webcam ,even though it can double up as one, for two main reasons :
a. it drains the battery very rapidly and is not suitable for extended use without an adapter.
b. it requires the built in lens cap to be opened for long period and if it gets jammed and refused to close later on, that probably will cost you a lot of money to repair.
So if you treasure your camera, use it in the normal way - only for taking pictures and get a $10 webcam for webcam purposes.
You can buy a power adapter for this camera and use it while the camera is on.
You can get windows XP to work with it using digital camera settings. (No need for drivers.)
The built in lens cap can fail any time. It's a Sony, it probably won't fail unless dropped.
There is extended software that you can buy to use the W55, just do a search on the internet.

How can I buy this. Now I am in Okinawa International centre, Okinawa, Japan
Could any one help me to solve this problem?
1. Ensure the format and file names of the images have not been changed.
IMPORTANT: Some third-party software used to view images may change the image file format when an image is viewed. This will result in the inability of the camera to display the images.
2. Ensure the file and folder structure on the recording media has not been changed.
3. If the image resolution or content has been changed, the image cannot be viewed using the index feature of the camera.
Your card may also be corrupted. Try a photo recovery utility for the memory stick.
I have not tried to connect with PC.
Photos which I took is last week are still accessible and I can see without any problem. But new photos or recording are not accessible. It give me 'File Error' when i try to see those.
I will try options you suggest and will see.
Thanks
Also check your batteries for being underpowered or near dead.
Was it dropped?
Thanks!
Have you checked to make sure that sounds aren't muted in the camera's sound menu?
Thanks!
Thank you for the answer. I did all obvious things to see about the sound. I took the camera back to store. Come to find out the camera only has a mike but no speaker. it looks like a lot of the newer cheaper models have this same thing. i returned it, and will still use my older version for now.
Also, check with SONY about memory card compatibility. you may be using the wrong card.
You may just have a bad card. Have you been able to recreate the error with a separate memory card?
This is precisely the reason why I recommend several smaller cards, rather than one larger one. Cards do go bad from time to time. I'd also recommend you try resetting your camera to it's default settings. That may help. Absent that, you may need to contact SONY for servicing.
Contacting Sony is always an option available to every questionerer:))
Default settings and other hints were all tried before posting the question. Thanks anyways to have taken your time. I"m grateful. I'm sure this is batteries. When they are low this error message is more prone to pop up. Though I have to confirm this phenomenon yet. Will let you know what happens for sure.
Thanks again,
Dr. Afaq Qureshi.
But I do agree with you on the batteries. Even if not low, if they are underpowered (a cheaper brand for instance), that could easily be it. Let us know what you find out.
Thank you for your kind reply. Yes you are so right about how the basics are either forgotten or omitted while operating a machine like a digicam. No the camera wasnt dropped ever and moreover its so new; bought it only a month ago. I appreciate your prompt reply and would like that its the batteries. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Dr. Afaq A. Qureshi.
My options are: Sony Cybershot s650
OR
Sony Cybershot DSC S60
The S650 is about 2 years newer and is much advanced over the S60 in many respects. You can get a side-by-side comparison of the two here ( dpreview.com/reviews/compar... ), but in my mind there's no debating that the S650 is the better choice by far.
Hope this helps!
Many thanks...
Kevin
Shutter lag is always going to be a problem with consumer digitals (with the exception of low-end dSLRs, which are built quite differently from your average point & shoot model). The S650 can't erase shutter lag any more than any other camera in its class can. In general, however, there are some things you can do to cut it down:
1. Pre-focus. This is the most important thing you can do to cut down on shutter lag. Pretty much every digital camera these days allows you to pre-focus your shot by half-pressing the shutter release button and holding it there. Usually the focusing bracket on the LCD/viewfinder will light up and/or a beep will sound. You can hold this pre-focus for as long as you like, but when you go ahead and complete the press of the shutter release, the result should be near instantaneous.
2. Make sure the flash is charged (if flash is needed). Going to shoot a picture when the flash isn't charged up can result in a big lag while the camera sucks juice from the batteries. If you're shooting in a situation that requires flash, make sure to turn on and pre-focus the camera at least once in order to charge up the flash.
Hope this helps!
Thank you.
but shows formatting error and now not working with the camera nor can be read in a computer . I am really desperate. Can any one suggest a solution.....please
Marc
Although it is not stated anywhere, I found it has an advantage and that is for people who open the battery cover accidentally, without first switching off the camera, the current is cut off immediately.
Just image if this is not the case, all the data inside the memory stick would have been lost if the battery door is opened while it is still saving the picture file.
Between the two 'evils', battery dropping out and data lost, I would prefer to watch out for the batteries rather than losing the data.

Of the 4 Sony products I've purchased in the last year, only one is still working. The Sony memory stick crapped out after a few months (lost over 100 images), and now the CCD has a problem—the images have horizontal lines across them. After trying to get help from Sony, I've given up. Went with Fuji. I hope Sony gets things back on track—at one time I could bank on anything I bought from them as sturdy and reliable. No longer.

This camera has great picture quality, the only problem is that after taking a few pictures while viewing them it displays a blue screen stating "FILE ERROR" and sometimes your are unable to download all of them to your PC but after formatting your Camera your are good to go.

I had a S500 before the 650. I think 650 is better but wish the LCD display was bigger. I'm not quite satisfied with the indoor video quality with low lighting. Another feature I'm missing is that it does not support audio output when playing video back.
Anyway, I have achieved more than satisfying results with outdoor stills. I have enlarged a few of them without losing resolution too. Ideal for wall hangings.
more on this later...

Bought this camera - unreliable, blurry pictures. Made me miss graduation pictures because it is so slow. Returned it and got a new one. Used it 3 times and then the LCD screen went. Sony refused to replace it. Future Shop customer service was terrible.

Recieved as a gift to take pictures of our new baby. Missed many important never going to get back memories because of this horrible, unreliable, picece of junk!

I bought this camera because I assumed it was good because I had the Cybershot 4 mega pixel. Never again, the 4mg is way better then this one. The pictures come out grainey, flash is too strong when used, and when I try to use it with no flash pictures come out worst. I love Sony but this camera is trash.

I bought 2 of these cameras at Christmas for my daughters. They have already quit working. The usb cords doesn't work any more and when you put the batteries in it will come on then shut right back off. The pic quality isn't that great either. Save your money up and buy something better

I would highly suggest a different camera! I had a five mega pixel camera take better pictures than this lousy thing!!! All my pictures come out grainy looking! Going back to good ole Kodak camera. Lower price better picture!!!!!!
- 3.0 out of 5
I have the camera with me right now... well if you use one of the options that takes a picture with flash it's like there is too much light and most of the features are blinded out IF you are using it to take a picture of youself....it's ok for my first camera...=)

I liked the camera, simple easy to use and more over a great pictures. Only thing is this camera is missing the red-eye correction the night time photos will tell you the story.
- 4.0 out of 5
though we can take photos with high mega pixel (7.2 mps), if you try to see the actual size of the photos, u will see blurred margins & also low picture quality as in VGA camera. but picture qualitiy will remain better unless you try to zoom the photo to actual size!!
- 2.0 out of 5
But you all know that OKAY is just not enough today. its got a feeling of some plastic toy. the flash sometimes can be very strong the screen in small only 2 inch.
the pictures are okay. not too brilliant and the video is lousy.
you should think of other camera. thats my opinion.and not by Sony do yourselves a favour
- 4.0 out of 5
For the price range and considering the amount of goodies coming as presets and the resolution (7.2 Mps) what else we are looking for in a digicam?
- 3.0 out of 5
I loved this camera, until the zoom lens stuck half open. It won't open any further and also won't close. I contacted Sony to see what they could do about it repairs/replacement, they said to send it to them and they didn't know how much it would cost. What happened to the warranty? At any rate I kept it, didn't bother to send it in since I was going to be charged. To repair this locally would cost more than I paid for the camera.

I think this is an awsome camera for the price! (I bought it for $130 at STAPLES and got a waranty for $60) I have had it for about two months, and I am very pleased with it. The biggest problems, though, is that it doesn't play sound from movies on the camera, and the focus is slow sometimes. Overall, it is very easy to use, the colors are bright and true, and it takes great macro (closeup) pictures. I would recomend this camera to any interested in digital photography.

I really like this camera it is SO lil. I like it to couse you can do b&w pics, & sepia . i have had no problems with this camera. it also has a lot of different modes to put it on to take pics . 2 nite ones, landscape, beach, etc.. The only thing I do not like about it is there is always a flash with all the pics.. the only one that does not have flash is one of the nite vision ones. And it takes to long to take pics u have to wait untill the second flash cames before you can move . but it is a excellent camera

I got a read error format error when I bought my 1 gig memory stick that the Sony site verified would work for my camera. The auto focus has problems, sometimes it focuses correctly sometimes it doesn't leading to ruined shots. You should know that I researched it and the read format error isn't covered by Sony, and its a frequent problem that they refuse to address.
Buy something else.

this camera is a beautiful , good working camera. it has a good sized screen , and lets you take black and white , or sepia pictures. ive had problems with it lately , because ive dropped it , but it works perfectly when it isnt broken

It looked good. The box said 7.1 megapixels, the price was less than the contemporary cameras by Casio, Cannon, Panasonic, Olympus and others; so we bought it. First day after shooting about 50 images (the batteries are new, a 1GB duocard is inserted) the LCD suddenly goes blank and makes your mind get cloudy and fills you with rage. What next: You restart, eyes fixed to the glistening sleek object in your hand you adored a few hours ago in the retailer shop, and viola all you get is the message "file read error". Nothing works. Now you get to work. You insert new batteries, format the duomemory card, check all the functions given on the top rotator on the right upper side, images are acquired smoothly and you are about to take a sigh of relief. But then suddenly the fatal message reappears "file read error". You go to the retailer and show him the warranty card. He reads it like an idiot and says "this problem is not covered under warranty"., you try to log on to the website of sony, its simply not available for your country. What a great purchase this sony is!!!

I got this camera on sale at Sears for 150.00/130.00 I believe, and with Sears Protection Plan it came to about 180.00. The battery life is okay. Get rechargeable batteries and take batteries out of camera when not in use, to maximize power. The only real problem I had was that the sound with the movies you can make with the camera didn't work on the camera. But, I will go get a replacement soon as the original warranty may cover it. Overall, great camera, great megapixels. Easy to use.
