Editor's Review
The S2100 is a bare-bones digital camera, but cheap enough to warrant a look—especially with such an, um, interesting design. Sony fans with no money: this is your camera.

Video Volume (Kandis Fox — 02/03/2011)
When I record videos and play them why can't I hear anything? Is my volume down or is it just nonfunctional? If there a setting I can go to or a button i cant see that I can press, please tell me.. Thank you.

According to Consumer Reports, it has no audio playback, in camera. That's pretty common though.

How do u get to mono
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (11/20/2010)
Not sure what you mean by this. Are you saying you don't have sounds when you use the video feature? Try resetting the camera.

Kyla (12/05/2010)
I am assuming the conclusion is that this camera does not have video sound when playing back on the camera? Is that what mono means in the specs? I am looking for a camera with a built in speaker-what would it say in the specs under "microphone/speaker"?

That probably means the volume is turned off. Or it doesn't have a speaker. Have you tried the video on your PC?

which is better cannon a1100is or sony s2100

by James DeRuvo (09/23/2010)
I'm always more partial to Canon, largely because they do better in low light, use SD cards rather than memory sticks, and you'll never have to deal with proprietary technologies that paint you into a corner. Oh, and you don't have that Sony nameplate premium in the pricetag. IMHO

memory card included or a seperate purchase? (e.c. watson — 08/02/2010)
does this camera come with a memory stick included or do i have to buy seperate

Liam McCabe (08/03/2010)
No, but depending on which merchant you buy from, they might toss it in for free, or at least offer you a bundle so you can save a few bucks.

my s2100 is not recording sounds while in video mode.so is that a defect or is it how it works by default?if its not by default how do i
reply to this comment
Chris Weigl (07/29/2010)
It should be recording sound, have you tried uploading the videos to your computer and playing them there? The camera may not have a speaker built-in.

Hi, i just bought this camera and i just love it. I noticed that when you record movies and play back, there is no sound. You only see the pictures on the screen but no sound at all on the camera itself. I can't get my head around why Sony has this wonderful camera and leaves out that option. Am i seeing right or just missed it?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (06/23/2010)
It may probably be either that the volume is turned down (check in the menu settings) or that the camera itself doesn't have a speaker. Or, it may be it only records the video. But that's very rare.

I'd go with the Canon SX. I'm not much of a Sony fan because of their proprietary obsessions and their cameras tends to under perform in low light. Another option to consider is the Panasonic FH20. It gets great reviews for it's low light performance and good quality video.

can s2100 operate with lithium ion battery,to reduces the hassle to buy AA batteries again and again

by James DeRuvo (05/01/2010)
There are rechargeable Lithium Ion AAs you can get. But you want to be certain they are recommended by the manufacturer or lens errors can happen.

Sony S2100 vs Nikon L22 (Patrick — 04/27/2010)
I'm going to Europe and want an inexpensive, reliable camera for my trip. How does the Sony S2100 compare with the Nikon L22? I'm looking for a camera that uses AA batteries as I won't always have access to a charger.
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (04/29/2010)
Nikon's are really suffering of late from designs that function poorly in low light, so I'd factor those right out. I'll tell you what your best bet is ... the Panasonic LH20. Fastest 8x lens in it's class. Or the Canon A series since you're looking for a camera to use AAs.

Power requirement (Paul Higgins — 04/08/2010)
Specs indicate power by AA Alkaline 3.0V. Will this camera operate properly using two rechargeable NIMH batteries at their lower combined operating voltage of 2.4V (1.2v + 1.2v)?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (04/08/2010)
I'd only use them if Sony recommends them. They're pretty proprietary obsessed and moving outside of that can cause performance issues.

question about card (Claudia ST — 03/09/2010)
does it work with a memory stick pro 256mb? (magic gate) I loved my old sony cybershot 4.1mp but it's just broken and I'd like to use the same card until i can buy a new one
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (03/10/2010)
You should have no trouble. It may not read any images already on the card. But you should start fresh with a format anyhow.

how do i operate this sonys2100?
reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (02/18/2010)
That's quite a question. My suggestion is to give your manual a good read through. That really is the best way to not only learn how it operates, but to get to know what features you can experiment with and take advantage of.
If you don't have one, you can download a PDF copy from sonystyle.com under support. And the PDF version has the advantage of being searchable.
