This model is one year old. It will still be a fine performer, but take a look the newer W330. It has a similar price, a little more power, and SD-card support. Here's what we had to say about the W230 last year:
The Sony W230 is yet another stylish offering from one of the leading names in digital photography. I have an old cybershot 4MP (DSC-P41) which has just broken down, but I'm a cybershot fan after this. can I use the old memory stick pro 256mb in this cybershot W230 until I can buy a new one? are they compatible?

Most images can be printed on the picture if your printer is PICT BRIDGE compatible. You may be able to display the menu in the settings. And then print. But these days, most camera makers aren't including date stamps.

Not really. Point and shoots will have some shutter delay. You can work around that by prefocusing and panning with the action, but it's always going to be there and you'll need to learn anticipation.

Most point and shoots don't zoom while recording because the cheap mics they use in cameras like this will pick up the motor noise of the zooming lens. The only other option is to zoom and record no audio. Better to zoom first, then start recording.

According to PC World ( pcworld.com/reviews/product... ) the answer is no, you can't. And the reason is usually that the microphone will pick up the motor as it moves the lens out and in.

I feel that the motion of the video is not that smooth, during recording the video, or playing it back either on the camera itself or any other device (pazooka — 07/09/2009)

It may be that you don't have the right codec to play it back or that you don't have enough memory/video memory to faciliate smooth video. Doubtful it's the camera itself.

Thank you so much for your answer, but I don't think its the codec, because its not smooth even during recording the video, or playing it back on the camera itself. About the memory, I have an 8 GB Sony pro duo memory stick, which should be the best for high quality shooting, and the camera is still new, so the memory card is almost empty. Please guys, help me out here with your replies if you have anything useful for me, because the camera is still new (I just had it 5 days ago or so), and this issue is killing me. Also, I bought it online from Amazon, so returning it would be a mess, and I would have to wait like a month to get my money, and by this month I would not even be in the country. Add to that, I have actually found it cheaper on the very same Amazon, and on stores, right after I bought it, that's why all of this is getting me crazy. Sorry for making it long, but I really need help with this video issue...Thanks alot to all of you.

It's pretty much a horse race, although I think the W230 is just a hair sharper and bolder colors. But your mileage may vary.

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix FS15; the LCD screen is terrible: you can't see the picture when the camera is tilted-"negative"-like look, while the top is away from you and almost a washout when the top is tiled towards you! I returned the camera right away!

I'd get a camera bag, extra memory stick. That's about it. Maybe an extra battery.

Certainly it is going to depend on what you want to do with the camera but you will want to get a memory stick as one is not supplied and the internal memory of the camera is about 15MB. The battery is rechargeable and is supplied with the camera as well as the charger. The battery must be removed from the camera to charge though so you may want an extra battery. The battery is rated to last for 3 hours while shooting pictures and 6 hours while viewing them so consider that in your choice. The camera comes with software to help you load the pictures onto your computer as well as wiring to attach it to your computer or television. The only other things you may want to consider are a carrying bag though it is small and will fit in a bag or pocket or maybe a tripod if you want one for stills.

Well, it will be a decent camera, and have decent picture quality. For the price its definitely a great camera, but its hard to tell exactly how good the picture quality is at this point. Also at this price range I would probably go with a Canon SD series over a Sony.

This camera is probably pretty hard to find, if not impossible. Ebay is going to be your best option here, but even then I'd try to go for another camera that's more available internationally. I don't think you'll find it at any camera store anywhere, but I guess you could try. Look on internet sites, or try and find it used.

This camera is the best, i used to have a nikon coolpix, and this camera is 20 steps up! Easy to use, auto focus, super zoom (as i call it).. The only problems is, if you use the super zoom, the picture wont auto focus, and is usually blurry.. and you cant shoot in anything but color, and i like to take black and white photos... If your a beginner photographer and you like to take stills, for the price, this is a great camera! I dont think il ever trade it in, until it dies.. Never have problems with the battery, with a tottaly dead battery, it only takes an hour to charge... I take photos for hours before my camera dies, and if you dont use the flash you save tons of battery, but dont be fooled, it may say it has 2 bars, but it really has 3, i dont know why, but in camera mode, it says 2 bars, but in viewing mode it says 3 bars.. soo.. but anyways GREAT CAMERA!!

Asked specifically for a camera that took good pics of action ie kids on moto x bikes but was easy to use for everything else, CANT seem to find the sports mode on here !

Sorry if the subject is perfectly still the pictures are great. But the slightest movement of the subject (hands or head) the pix are blurry. The camera also does not shoot fast enough. Had a professional in a photo shop try to help. Answer was, "you must take your time while shooting" I had an older canon mdl SD450, was much better
