Best Cameras Under $150 / Digital Camera HQ Holiday Buyer's Guide
Last updated on 11/29/2010
You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a top-of-the-line digital camera. We've rounded up a selection of high-quality, well-reviewed, affordable digital cameras to prove that great digital camera deals can be found, and you can take great photos without spending too much money.
If you absolutely have to have a camera for under $100, take a peek at the Panasonic F3. It hits the basic marks for a digicam circa 2010, with a 12 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom, 2.7-inch screen and 720p HD video. It's dead simple to use and will get the job done. Don't expect fantastic performance from this guy, but for $99, this is worth your money.
The Nikon Coolpix L22 is about as simple as a camera can get. It's a small, no-fuss point-and-shoot digital camera with a 12 megapixel sensor and 3.6x zoom. Great for casual photographers who don't want to get too wrapped up in the operation of their camera, the Nikon L22 is an easy buy for consumers who want to save time and money. Just remember that even if this is a decent camera for the price, you still get what you pay for. While the L22 is great for convenience and ease-of-use, you miss out on many elements that make for true high-quality photos. Runs on AA batteries.
[Read our full Canon Powershot A3100 IS Review]
The Canon Powershot A3100 IS is the latest model in Canon's A series, a long-running and popular point-and-shoot line aimed at novice photographers. Compact, easy to use, and pretty cheap as well, this is a solid bet if you're on a tight budget. It includes popular features like image stabilization, a respectable 4x zoom, and video mode, and now runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery. It'll be tough to find a better value than this snapshooter right here.

Best Camera for real estate on a budget (Cadi M — 03/28/2013)
I am wanting to start my own business shooting real estate for real estate agents. Taking pics of their houses that they have on the market. I don't have a big budget and honestly want to see how successful I can become and then I can invest in a better camera but need one to get started and that will show them I can do a nice job. Thanks

Don't be fooled by megapixel obsession (Derek — 10/30/2011)
I would ignore the megapixel rating for cameras. Honestly, it means nothing. Anything over, say, 8 megapixels is going to mean nothing to the average non-professional photographer except for larger files that take up lots of space and time to transfer. Quality is determined as much by how the camera interprets pixels as how many it records, too - so a 10 megapixel image on a quality camera can look identical to a 16 megapixel photo on a cheaper one.
MUCH more important things to consider are how much OPTICAL zoom it has (and only optical zoom, because digital zoom is a farce and results in low-res photos), how well it photos in low-light situations, and how big the view screen is. From personal experience with cameras, Canon and Nikon are unmatched. It seems like Canon cameras have better resolution quality but Nikon has better color control.

Vexed & Disappointed in how I was handled as a paying customer (Sheryl Gregg — 02/19/2011)
I bought and paid for Kodak C143 bundle @ $59.99 plus tax. Cashier showed 5 in stock before placing my order, I had to go to pick-up to get the camera. Ordinarily Sears has treated me better. A woman bust out of the doors and looked at my ticket I had scanned and told me "they" did not have any in stock. Why or How would all of these problems occur after purchase? I had to go back upstairs and let my checker go through to refund me cash although I used VISA. He never wavered from the 5 in inventory on his monitor. I believe he had called pick-up before keying in the purchase. Communication broke? The woman said he should have come down to make sure for himself. I was not able to order it online. Will there be something like this bundle $ soon? It seemed like a good camera on demo, Perfect for those of us with very limited income --disability..

It completely stopped working (was a hand me down) Looking to buy a new one under $150 that is affordable, easy to use, fun, lil more advanced though with option, quality photos is most important to me. Canon's SD series is a solid performer, but the problem is, it's zoom is woefully lacking. I recommend the Panasonic ZS7 or ZS5 or the FH20. One thing about the FH20 though is that it's performance in low light is hit and miss. But it's still a great camera for the price.

I can find it on sale for less than the $150 right now. I only have until spring break (3 weeks) before they leave. And do all the panasonic cameras use only panasonic batteries???

For something not too expensive and still good quality, take a look at some of Canon's lower-end models. The A3100 is a great camera. The A495 is solid too, and costs less than $100. Hope this helps.

Anyone have a good suggestion that addresses these two issues? I know I can't get perfect for $150, so I'll be happy to settle. :) Thanks!

In that price range, we're fans of the Panasonic FH20 -- has a nice zoom lens, pretty quick performance and sharp results for the price. As you say, it won't be perfect, but it's a very well rounded package. Also, any Canon in that price range will do well. It'll have a smaller feature set -- smaller zoom, no HD video -- but performance is always good with those cameras.

That's a DSLR. Point and shoot lenses just aren't fast enough for sports and very low light. Some work better than others bt at that price point the Fh20 is probably the best you can do along w the Panasonic zs7z (iirc).

looking to use every day (paul moore — 08/31/2010)
I take lots of snapshots EVERY DAY (bless the digital age!), at the office, home, pets, kids, portraits, flowers, landscape, road trips- from car window too, action shots - sports and animals. Very often outside in low light. I'm looking for a versatile camera, good zoom ability. I get frustrated with the lag time between shots. I read that pixels over 10 slow down the camera. Also read the speed can be increased with a faster card. With the speed of technology, what is an average life of these cameras? It's difficult to
spend over $130 if it needs to be replaced in just
a few years.

Liam McCabe (08/31/2010)
Digital cameras have an average lifespan of about 4-5 years, probably less than that if you use it regularly, and even less than that if you buy a $130 camera. If you spend extra on a good solid camera and take good care of it, it should last for a few years. Don't worry about it going obsolete -- it'll still take pictures in five years the same way that it does today, you just won't have all the latest features on the camera, which is fine.

Thinking of buying a CHEAP BUT GOOD camera. My preference is either a canon or a nikon. My nephew (10yrs old) likes to pix so thought get one to share with him. The cheaper the better. Nothing complicated of course. Am told cameras using AA batteries are better than rechargable ones, is it? Know nothing about cameras.
reply to this comment
Liam McCabe (08/09/2010)
You can get Nikons for really cheap, but there's a good chance you'll be unhappy with the quality. Canon makes a better low-end camera, but they don't make them as cheap as Nikon does.
AA vs. rechargeable battery is a matter of personal preference. You'll end up spending less on batteries with a rechargeable one, and if you want a backup, just buy an additional rechargeable battery. AA batteries are handy because you don't have to worry about forgetting to recharge, running out on a long hike, etc. But AAs rarely hold a charge as long unless you invest in some fairly high-end lithium rechargeables. Really though, it's a matter of preference.

camera suggestions (MaryT — 07/24/2010)
I am interested in purchasing a camera to shoot mostly pics of kids, pets and outdoor shots. I would like something that I can easily load onto the computer for sharing with family long distance. reply to this comment
by James DeRuvo (07/29/2010)
Top three are the Panasonic FH20, the Canon SD1200IS and the Canon A1000IS. The FH20 has the largest lens of the three at 8x optical zoom, but it pays a penalty in that in low light, the performance is hit and miss depending on the lighting conditions. Word is, while the SD1200 is a nice design, the image quality dips as the ISO climbs. The A1000 actually works great and you can use AAs, which are available everywhere. But it has half the optical zoom as the FH20.

Liam McCabe (06/29/2010)
Very difficult to find a camera like this, and if you do, it's either on sale, or will be a piece of junk. Here's a list of the cameras fitting your description in our database (between 3x to 5x zoom, so make sure you're looking at one with 5x zoom):
digitalcamera-hq.com/search... see three that you can get for under $100 right now: Fuji AX200; Samsung SL600 (available for $99 through Target, usually more like $130); and a refurbished Nikon S570 for $100 (goes for $150-170 new -- be very, very careful about buying refurbished cameras).
We don't generally get to review cameras in this price range -- manufacturers don't usually loan them out for review -- so I can't say for sure. In this case, I would go with the Samsung while it's on sale. They usually do a pretty good job of making cheap cameras with passable image quality.
Bottom line, though, is that you won't be getting a great camera. I wouldn't expect any to last more than 18 months, if that long, and indoor/low-light images will be blurry. My suggestion? Save another $50-60, and you'll have many more solid choices available to you.

Are there any options around this price point that offer good all around pictures but strive in the macro area. I want something versatile but if there's something that can excel in extremely close shots that would be great. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know it will be a bit over my head photography wise but I figured I'll have it for years to come and can grow into it. It comes with the 18-55 Kit lens and I will pick up a nice macro lens and have to figure out a real nice versatile 3rd lens now. Just kind of clueless on the still lenses so any advice on a good all around lens would be appreciated.

Photography and how it changed my life (Long Donga — 05/18/2010)
ditto all above. I first discovered my grandfathers camera amongst other items in his closet. I began to take many photos - inspired grately by the nudes I found in the film which was in the camera when I found it. I photographed many a naked body - particularly focusing on the uniqueness of individual genitalia.
I encourage all to buy cheap cameras. You dont need to expensive ones to get a good shot - trust me, in my particular line of photography a box brownie would do the job.
BTW -I have also been insired by the works of James A. Look on flickr!!!!!!!!!!

At that price, spend about $30 more and get the Panasonic LH20. Very fast optical zoom lens. Great low light performance.

You could try something like the Casio G1, Panasonic TOUGH 8000 or 6000 (or the newer 8010, 6020, or 3000 models), Panasonic TS1 (or the newer TS2), and Sony has a ruggedized camera I believe as well. The picture quality on these models is never THAT good, but you can bang the camera around quite a bit. They definitely cost more than $150 though. Hope this helps.

Just about any digital will give you nominal video quality. That's not the issue. The issue is the audio it's still poor quality due to cheap omnidirectional mica. And for that price point, the term quality really isn't there. Video will be VHS at best. You may want to look into the zi8 by modal. Camcorder in your range and has an external mic Jack for a better audio source. Iirc it does take stills.

Am I correct that you want to use a camera to take pictures of older snapshots so you can digitize them? You're far better off getting a scanner. And there are models which will also scan your negatives and slides to boot. You have better control that way and it'll scan the image at optimal light and focus distance. And you can get a scanner for less than a camera.

I am not sure if I asked the question correctly. I need a faster speed for between shots. I hate having to wait for the next shot and want to just keep going click, click. You know how kids are? They look great then you miss the shot because the camera is not ready. Does this make sense?

Yep I gotcha this time. Basically, you get what you pay for. Under $150, you're going to have to wait for a while between shots. Up around $200, you'll start to notice much better performance, but there's still definitely a lag. You can mitigate this with a faster SD/SDHC memory card (the higher the "class" the faster the camera can save the picture to the card and the quicker it's ready to take the next shot). But you'll still have to wait at best 2-3 seconds between shots. If you really want near-instantaneous shooting, you'll have to go with a dSLR.
Basically, if you have to go under $150, the "least worst" option is something from the Canon A series. I haven't reviewed one yet, but the Canon A3000 looks good and fits this budget.

I need a fast shutter speed? which inexpensive camera is the best for that?

Liam McCabe (03/02/2010)
Panasonic's latest lineup has some pretty quick shutter speeds. The FH1 is very snappy, goes for just $160. Anything around the $100-120 range won't be too fast. Hope that this helps.

Good camera for Etsy (Marvin — 02/21/2010)
That's interesting, I'm looking around for a good camera for my sister who wants to put her jewelry on Etsy! She wants something simple and easy to use so I suggested the Samsung SL30.

At that price point, I'd go with the But also do yourself a favor and get two other items: 1. a tripod so you can lock down the camera - which is always best for still lifes, and then also pick up, or make a . For what you want to do, lighting your subject, and giving it negative space to draw the eye straight to your subject is key to a good professional looking image.

There is no free donut, and those carrot's on a stick which offers freebies online for your email address and the addresses of 10 of your friends are pure scams. However, you may want to check with your bank for a loyalty program. Banks like CitiBank offer "thank you" points which can then be turned in for products, services, etc.
