High school and college students want to take great pictures of their salad days and look cool while they’re doing it. If you’re camera shopping for a student this holiday season (or even if you’re a student shopping for yourself), start your search below.

Form, functionality, and a sweet price point all converge at the Sony W350. Sony always makes a good looking camera, and this is yet another example of a thin, attractive, and smart model. The features are typical for a camera in this class, at 14 megapixels and 4x optical zoom, yet the interface is refreshingly slick, with features like smile detection and the popular press-and-sweep panorama function. It's a simple, reliable camera, perfect for a student to fit in a pocket or purse, bring along for a day at the park or a night out, and post the results to Facebook in minutes.
A Canon ELPH is always a wise choice for a well-designed compact, and the Canon SD1400 happens to be one of the best-looking pocket cameras out there this year. Performance and image quality are up to the solid standards of the SD series, while the HD movie mode, optical image stabilization, and 4x zoom add versatility. It's a sleek, reliable pocket shooter from the leader in compact cameras.

Parties are part of college life (after study time is over, of course), but it’s tough to find a small camera that can take great pictures in a dark setting. Enter the Canon SD4000 IS, a stylish compact that manages to capture good shots in dimly lit rooms, sans flash. The secret is the CMOS sensor and wide f/2.0 maximum aperture. The rest of the spec sheet is respectable too: 3.8x zoom, image stabilization, 3-inch LCD, and 720p HD movie mode to name a few. Dominating the darkness does cost a little extra, as the SD4000 goes for around $300, but if you want solid low-light shots from an easy-to-use, pocket-sized package, accept no substitute.

The Nikon D3100 is for the student who has studied hard, earned good grades, and taken up photography as a hobby. It's an entry-level digital single lens reflex (dSLR) camera, a little cousin to the kind of cameras that the pros use and a great “learning” model. An ultra-compact it is not, but the performance simply cannot be matched by a compact point-and-shoot camera. The D3100 sports full manual control, immediate shutter response, a 14.2 megapixel sensor, a vivid 3-inch LCD display, and an excellent 1080p HD video mode, to name a few features. The recommended price tag pushes $700, but for any aspiring photographer, a dSLR is a must-have and the D3100 is an excellent starting point for a young, amateur shooter ready to step up from the limiting realm of compact cameras.

I am looking for a new digital, and I have narrowed down my choices to the Canon SD1400 and the Sony T99. I'm an amateur photographer and I'm looking for the best for my buck. Any help would be great! Thanks

I'd take a look at the Panasonic ZS5/7 and FH20. For more "bang for the buck" you can't beat the 8x and 10x optical zooms for the price.

Suggestions Please! (Ashlee — 11/28/2010)
I'm deciding between a Nikon or a Canon and I'll be studying in Europe for a few months so I want a great camera that's easy to use and that has a great low light feature and good battery life. I looked at the Canon PowerShot SD4500 but kept hearing about the bad battery life. And I don't plan on taking a lot of video so video features don't bother me. Any suggestions please? Thank you!

I think you might want to look at the Nikon S8100 -- meant to be similar to SD4500, in that it has a long zoom and does pretty well in low lighting. The battery life is better than the SD4500. It's cheaper, too.

Buy a Canon for the best quick pics (Lisa — 12/07/2011)
Don't buy this nikon.
I have a Nikon D90. Its fabulous! Bulky and pricey, but great for long term picture taking.
My daughter is traveling to Italy for short term. I am giving her a Canon AS150. For the money, YOU WILL GET GREAT pics that will challenge my D90!

Would a Sony W350 be good for a 13 year old that wants to be a photographer or is she to young??

I think that the W350 would be a solid camera for a teenager. It's designed to be cute and easy to use, not too expensive, and a pretty good camera overall.

SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!! (Az — 10/22/2010)
I have googled and searched for a recommendation for a good point and shoot digital camera that is fast!!I have a very active chihuahua and nephews who move around too quick to take a good shot!I have the sony w350 and use it on intelligent mode and it is sooooooooooo slow, i keep getting pictures of the side of my chihuahuas face, or already out of the frame!. Please I only have a couple days left to return this camera and get another one, please, please need a suggestions for a digital camera that has fast shutter speed, for taking pics of fast action, football games, dancing, dogs and kids! The problem is that point and shoots have shutter lag, slow lenses and limited flash range. If you have the need for speed youreally need a DSLR.

Good zoom/ small budget (Dale K — 10/07/2010)
I have a canon dslr rebel xt w/efs 18-55 lens. I live in S. Al. & want to shoot aligators and other stuff without getting to close. also have shaky hands. what's a good lens for zooming in on wild life?

The 18-200 is nice. I don't know if you want to go any further out than that as the longer the focal length, the more camera shake is pronounced, even with image stabilization. But if you have a mono or tripod, then it's as far out as you can afford. But also remember that the longer the lens, the slower it gets.

I'm looking to buy a decent camera that will in the future lead to me doing professional photography. What is the best camera to start out with.

Go with the Canon T2i. It's a solid entry level camera and you can always use the lenses you have with a more advanced body when you're ready to trade up. And you get video to boot.

It's OK, but Canon and Panasonic are at the top of the heap. Better glass, richer color, faster shot times.

Really? Why can't he say they are nice cameras? You make no sense at all, and your grammar is horrendous. Even if it is text speak you can at least try to make sense.
