10-12 Megapixel Digital Cameras
Lower resolution does not dictate the worst cameras, and in fact many of the compact cameras on this list are among the best money can buy. Most of the very good prosumer cameras, like the Canon S100, Olympus XZ-1, Fujifilm X10, and newly announced Canon G1 X, have stayed in this range. Compact cameras use much smaller sensors than their mirrorless or DSLR counterparts, which generally means more tightly packed photosites and a worse signal-to-noise ratio. Rather than continue the megapixel race, these models have opted for the best image quality possible throughout the ISO range while still outputting files with enough resolution for an 11x14 inch print. If you're just looking for a point and shoot, there are also a number of still-competitive 12 megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensors that are worth a look.
DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have, for the most part, moved on from this segment into the land of higher resolutions. Still, there are plenty of very good bargains (check out the Pentax k-r and Canon xsi) to be found, as well as the first crop of 10 megapixel CCD sensors that still can't be beat for clean blue skies at low ISO (think Nikon D200, Nikon D60, Pentax K10d). Nikon also has the relatively recent J1 and V1, which have smaller sensors than a 4/3 camera but are still quite impressive.
